Religious Education at Morland Area C of E (VA) Primary

Religious Education is a core subject in our Church of England school; we help the children learn from religions as well as about religions and we enable the children to develop a sound knowledge, not only of Christianity but also of other world religions and faiths. Children will reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding. We support the children to grow and respect the diversity of our world and appreciate the skills and talents of all.

Religious Education Documents

As a Voluntary Aided school we are not required to follow the Cumbria Agreed Syllabus (see link) but we refer to the document to support our planning. We base our planning on two schemes of work - Understanding Christianity and Discovery RE.

 Our very talented staff, translate these into interactive, creative and spiritual experiences for children.

Teaching Time

Children have 1 hour of Religious Education per week. The children also engage in daily collective worship and work in class groups to deliver family assemblies. In KS1 collective worship is led by the teacher and KS2 led by the teacher and children themselves. These sessions include traditional prayers and prayers created by the children; the use of artefacts such as candles, statues, Bibles and music and often follow a theme chosen by the children such as, ‘Thankfulness,’ ‘Forgiveness’ and ‘Love’; as well as the Church’s Liturgical Year.

RE Displays

Each class is encouraged to have a relevant RE display. The main hall will often have displays to enhance collective worship and the Liturgical Year.

Assessment in RE

The RE Subject Leader has an agreed system for the assessment of RE and Class teachers using end of unit assessments.

Pupil’s work will be assessed by the Class teacher and the great majority of pupils are expected be working at age related expectations or above.

Progress and achievement in Religious Education is reported to parents/carers in a written report at the end of each academic year.

As we continue to strive for higher standards, the RE Subject Leader will carry out a work scrutiny at least once a year and the HT will observe the teaching of RE.

Individual pupil work will be assessed using formative assessment and kept in children’s RE books.
